The Head of State hold talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in an enlarged format

November 2, 2023

The President of Kazakhstan and the Prime Minister of Hungary held talks in an expanded format with the participation of official delegations from both states.

As Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted, the historical roots of the two peoples and close ties have laid the foundation for deepening cooperation between the two states.

– Kazakhs and Hungarians are related peoples with a long history of friendly relations. The language, customs and culture of the two countries are similar. The descendants of the “Kypshak” tribes, who migrated to Europe from the Torgai steppes in the Middle Ages, live in Hungary today. We are proud of this. Thanks to our joint efforts, Kazakh-Hungarian integration is developing dynamically in all spheres. Dear Prime Minister, your contribution is invaluable. We are interested in further deepening our brotherly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation. I am convinced that today's talks will give a new impetus to the further development of the bilateral strategic partnership, – the Kazakh leader said.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev believes that between Kazakhstan and Hungary there is a good institutional basis for further strengthening of relations. In his opinion, the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation and the Business Council should play an active role in promoting trade relations.

– Despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions, our trade turnover grew by more than 20% last year. I am confident that we have every opportunity to increase bilateral trade turnover to $1 billion in the near future, – he emphasized.

During the talks, the sides expressed mutual interest in developing contacts in areas such as energy, transport, logistics, metallurgy, manufacturing, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, food industry and tourism.

In addition, the two leaders stated the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary ties through friendship groups operating in the parliaments of the two countries. The prospects of interaction within the framework of various international platforms, including the UN, the OSCE and the OTS.

On the meeting, the Head State also touched upon the issues of strengthening humanitarian ties. Today in Astana one of the streets will be named in honor of the national poet of Hungary, Sándor Petőfi, which serves as another clear evidence of close friendly ties between Kazakhstan and Hungary.

In turn, Viktor Orban thanked Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and the brotherly people of Kazakhstan for the warm welcome.

– Dear Mr President, it is a great pleasure to be here again. The last time we were here was before the pandemic. Even then we had a fruitful bilateral relationship, but the pandemic has taken its toll on our ties. We are here now to give a new impetus to our relationship. We have the closest historical ties with you in this region, and we are very pleased with your successes. Kazakhstan is an outstanding country with significant achievements. Each of my trips to Kazakhstan leaves deep impressions, – said the Hungarian Prime Minister.

The meeting resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of education.
